- Not strictly a Golden-Era film, but we just had to include in Ridely Scott's list! A truely brilliant film shunned by the critics for its religous conatations. Don't believe the hype. This is an amazing film, and will probably go down as Ridely Scott's masterpiece and the film he is most proud of.
- A fine cast of actors at the top of their game. Liam Neeson, Jeremy Irons, Eva Green, Edward Norton - all fantastic. And Orlando Bloom also deserves great praise in the lead role as Balian de Ibelin. People need to understand what the true life Balian was like, and then they can appreciate that Bloom nailed it.
- An amazing screenplay by William Monahan. For the sheer power of the dialogue, and the deep meanings to take away and inspire you ... it's up there with the very best, the very very best.
- A film about a very sensitive subject, but told from an unbiased neutral point of view about the true story of the Knight Crusaders and the battle for the holy land of Jerusalem. And as such this film was always going to make enemies and be shunned at the Award nominations. But for true movie fans, who can look above the politics of the subject matter, this film, if purely for its ambition and execution alone, will go down as one of the very best ever. Ridley Scott, we salute you!
From Ridley Scott, the visionary director of Black Hawk Down and Gladiator, comes this spectacular epic of courage, honor and adventure. Orlando Bloom stars as Balian, a young Frenchman in Medieval Jerusalem during the Crusades, who, having lost everything, finds redemption in a heroic fight against overwhelming forces to save his people and fulfill his destiny as a knight.
What man is a man who does not make the world better.
You are not what you were born, but what you have it in yourself to be.
Be without fear in the face of your enemies. Safeguard the helpless. Never lie, even if it leads to your death; that is your oath ...
[slap]... and that is so you don't forget it. Rise a knight... rise a knight!
I put no stock in religion. By the word religion I have seen the lunacy of fanatics of every denomination be called the will of god. I have seen too much religion in the eyes of too many murderers. Holiness is in right action, and courage on behalf of those who cannot defend themselves, and goodness. What god desires is here
[points to head]and here
[points to heart]and what you decide to do every day, you will be a good man - or not.
